Independent day school · Lake Norman, NC

Curious kids, known by name.

A K–8 school on six wooded acres near Lake Norman, with classes small enough that every child is seen, stretched and cheered on.

“We would rather know one child completely than a hundred children a little.” From the Larkfield founding letter · sample copy

Why Larkfield

Small on purpose. Ambitious by habit.

Parents tell us the tour is where it clicks: a teacher who greets each child at the door, a class reading under the oaks, an eighth grader showing a kindergartner the way to the library.

  • 14

    Students per class, at most

Every child gets a turn to talk, every day. Kindergarten and first grade have two teachers in every room.

  • 6acres

    An outdoor classroom, used daily

Woods, a creek and a kitchen garden. Every grade spends part of each school day learning outside, in any season.

  • K–8

    One campus, nine years

No middle school shuffle at age eleven. Older students read with younger buddies every Friday morning.

Two schools, one hallway.

Lower School builds the habits: reading, numbers, kindness, curiosity. Middle School puts them to work with real projects, real feedback and more independence each year.

A day at Larkfield

What a Tuesday actually looks like.

No glossy brochure day. This is the schedule a fourth grader follows, more or less, from drop-off to pickup.

Swipe to follow the day.

  1. Every child greeted by name at the door.

Drop-off opens at 7:40. Teachers are outside, not behind a desk.

    8:00 AM

    Morning meeting

Ten minutes on the rug: the plan for the day, a question to think about, a chance to share news.

  2. A boy in safety glasses holds up a flask during a science lab while a classmate watches
    9:30 AM

    Lab science

Goggles on. This week: what dissolves, what doesn't, and how you'd prove it.

  3. A class walks single file up a grassy hillside path on a sunny day
    11:00 AM

    Outdoor classroom

A walk to the creek to measure the water level, logged in the class field journal.

  4. Lunch is cooked here, every day.

The menu is in the parent portal. Allergies are flagged on every plate.

    12:10 PM

    Lunch and recess

Family-style tables, then thirty minutes of running around. Rain means the barn.

  5. Students painting at wooden easels in a bright art studio while their teacher looks on
    1:30 PM

    Studio art

Easels out. Fourth grade is painting the view from the garden, from memory.

  6. Three young children water plants in a garden with bright green watering cans
    2:30 PM

    Garden crew

Weeding, watering and a taste test. The kale makes it into Thursday's lunch.
